Arkansas Player Garners Mackey Award

The Arknasas Razorbacks can be proud as their tight end, D.J. Williams, who takes home the 2010 Mackey Award. Williams accepted the award at the Home Depot College Football Awards, bringing a new measure of pride to a state of dedicated fans. This is an even greater moment for Williams and the team, as he is the first Arkansas player to win it.

The John Mackey Award is a huge honor for a player to receive. The award has been given since 2001, and is placed in the hands of the most successful tight end in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The athlete must also display leadership qualities on the team, have a strong grade point average and have an excellent attitude on the field. With his performance and qualities on the field, Williams more than earned his award.

Williams has had an outstanding career with the Razorbacks on the football field. Currently, he is the NCAA leader in the number of yards receiving the ball as a tight end and in having the highest number of receptions. He also places in the number two spot on Arkansas’s list of caches made by a player who is not a wide receiver, with 147. He also has 1,817 yards receiving the ball as well. This makes him a strong player on the team and has played a role in their success this season.

On his team, Williams has completed a total of 589 yards on the field, netting 49 receptions and four touchdowns. His reception success has placed him six in the Southeastern Conference, or SEC, up to this point in the football season. His award winning went further as he also netted the Disney Spirit Award for being an inspiration to others in college football. All around, Arkansas is proud to have Williams as a part of their team.
